Corona and Brexit: logistics and the UK

Past week, the UK had to deal with chaos at the border. Due to a new mutation of the Coronavirus and Brexit, many transporters were stopped at the border and ended up in massive traffic jams creating delays.

Christmas and Brexit

At the end of December is always a busy moment for transporters, as they have to move all Christmas purchases over borders. But this year, they are under even more pressure as everyone wants to order from the UK before the new Brexit regulations come into effect. The result: traffic jams and loaded ferries.

The mutated Coronavirus

Because of a newfound mutation of the Coronavirus in England, France and The Netherlands closed their borders for traffic from the UK. This meant many transporters were stopped at the borders and had to wait in enormous traffic jams.

Currently, the borders are opened for transporters from the UK, if they are in possession of a negative corona test result. This means they can finally make their way to the rest of the EU to deliver the goods. But, this whole situation caused a lot of delay and chaos.

What does it mean for you?

Due to Brexit, some things will change with doing business between the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. Especially the transportation will require some additional handling. This means that the goods we send to the UK must be declared. In order to do this, we must have the EORI number of our customers. An EORI number is an identification number that you need to do business across the border and then deal with Customs. The EORI number ensures that data is exchanged faster in the EU.
